A day in the life of a 4 year old

"When I grow up I want to buy tea cakes."

This is the whispered wish of my 4 year old brother, Alex, whilst throwing a penny into the fountain at Trafalgar Square. Out of all the things he could have hoped for, he chooses teacakes. And he doesn't even really like teacakes!

This is the crazy little guy that I recently spent a whole day with. In London. On our own. No responsible grown ups to be seen.

We wanted to go to the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs. Easy, we could handle that. So we grabbed some gingerbread men for the journey and headed off on our adventure.

David Bailey in the making!

He's actually pretty good!

Big and Little

So, I didn't think this through. Museums lead to questions....many, many, many questions. Most of which I don't know the answer to. The worst part was being responsible for breaking the news to a 4 year old that all dinosaurs are dead. Yes, ALL of them.

This led to sad eyes and questions about every dinosaur we saw, "So is he dead?", "And those baby dinosaurs, are they dead?", "Did their mummy die too?". Oh. God.

Not great! So let this be a warning to you, plan all museum trips and research answers and explanations if you don't want to cause upset or better still stick to a zoo where all the animals are actually alive!

This dinosaur is dead

He's dead too

Unfortunately these dinosaurs are not cuddling as Alex thought, they are fighting. To the death I imagine. And now they are both dead!

I'll be leaving all future museum trips to my mum!

  1. Enjoy it whilst it lasts! I remember taking my brother to the Natural History Museum. Now he is 16 and would rather hang out with his friends than be seen his big sister :(

  2. Oh my gosh this was hilarious. I hardly ever laugh out loud at blog posts but this was brilliant.
You need to show him the 'All of my friends are dead' dinosaur t-shirt (maybe when he's a little older ;) )

  4. You can tell him how birds are dinosaurs too (yes, really! and dinosaurs had coloured feathers), that's cheers up a lot of young and old geeks all the time, and makes chickens look so much cooler! :)
