Divergent Premiere

Tuesday, 1 April 2014

On Sunday we had the absolute pleasure of being invited along to the European premiere of Divergent in Leicester Square. This was our chance to get a sneaky peek into the crazy world that Theo James now lives. The guys have known Theo for years, back to their university days, and so we were all very excited to be a part of his big day. Probably not as excited as the out of control, screaming, emotional girls waiting to catch a glimpse of him though!

We waited outside for Theo to arrive and the eruption of screams as he stepped out the car was deafening. I think the guys were slightly jealous that their day jobs don’t get quite the same reaction. Next it was our turn to stride down the red carpet. We lapped it up but weirdly there was no screaming for us.

Look who I bumped into on the way in (The lovely Tanya Burr). Thanks Jim for taking the pic!

Inside we were welcomed with a champagne reception and a balcony view of the red carpet action.

Now on to the film. Divergent follows suit with the current craze of teenage action novel turned blockbuster film, following in the very large footsteps of Twilight and Hunger Games. The Divergent trilogy, written by Veronica Roth was a best-seller in the USA but didn't quite gain the same following here. The film however has been highly anticipated across the globe, a lot to do with the handsome features of our very own Theo James.

The plot: It’s a science fiction, action fest set in a futuristic Chicago. Society is divided into five factions: Abnegation (selfless), Amity (peaceful), Candor (truthful), Erudite (intelligent) and Dauntless (brave), based on their personalities. The leading lady, Tris (Shailene Woodley) is Abnegation but soon finds out her true fate.

Teenagers are tested to indicate which faction they should choose to live with. Now the exciting bit, god forbid you might show the attributes of more than one faction because then you are Divergent (uhoh!). Divergent’s think independently and don’t conform with society so you can imagine what kind of trouble you might get yourself into.

After realising she is Divergent, Tris chooses to join Dauntless where she meets Four (Theo). This leads to a love story, an evil plot to kill the Abnegation faction (Kate Winslet) and a lot of fighting and running. Phew, exhausting!

Overall, and you may think I'm biased, I loved it. It’s obviously aimed at teenagers so if you hate Twilight and Hunger Games then it’s more than likely that it won't float your boat. I'd give it a go either way!

Afterwards there was a little party to celebrate, and what a fun night it was!
