Chicken Shop

Buk buk buk buk brrr-awk! Its Chicken time!

Exclusive trendy member’s club Soho House couldn’t be more dissimilar to fast food eateries like Nandos but they have spotted a popular trend and gone with it, branching out to develop their own range of fast food restaurants including popular joints such as the Pizza East, Dirty Burger and Chicken Shop.

If you venture to Kentish Town and walk 5 minutes up the road, past the Forum, then you will come across all 3 sat right next to each other.

I was due a catch up with the preggo one, our last catch up before the little one arrived, so we headed on down to Chicken Shop. Chicken Shop serves up free-range birds from Banham’s Farm in Norfolk, which are marinated overnight, steamed and then cooked over charcoal on their special rotisserie.

The restaurant is in a basement and has a diner feel with low lighting and an open kitchen where you can sit and watch the chefs work their magic. It is not open until 5pm weekdays so doublecheck the website before heading there.

The service was fantastic, extremely friendly and relaxed. Sadly there is a terrible rule, no photos allowed! Apparently this is because its part of the Soho House Group, bit pretentious! Luckily I’d taken quite a few photos before getting told off. Then I sneaked a few more. The new camera was gutted!

This place knows exactly what it is doing and does it very well. The menu is simple with chicken being the only option; the choice you get is what size? We went with half a chicken to share, crinkle cut fries and coleslaw. Fussy Sammy was freaking out that the chicken would be too spicy so we ordered extra fries to fill her up, just in case.

The food arrived within 5 minutes of ordering which was a bit too fast for my liking. It would be great if you wanted a very quick meal or if there was a huge queue but neither were true. All served in the ever popular blue and white enamel plates, yay!

We agreed that the chicken was delicious with a smoked charred flavour, even the pink coleslaw made Sammy smile. The fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, just as they should be. Good honest chicken and chips for a reasonable price.

As little one will be arriving soon, it was present time! Sammy and bump modelled the baby gro beautifully.

There’s a no booking policy at Chicken Shop so be prepared to queue if you go late in the evening. The pub across the road looks nice if you need to quench your thirst whilst you wait.

You can pop in to Chicken Shop for a takeaway if you live or work nearby. We wanted to share the fun so picked up a take-away chocolate brownie for Sammy’s husband which he was very pleased with.

Our verdict: some finger lickingly good chicken which kicks Nando’s butt!
