Prawn on the Lawn

So I've found it. My favourite restaurant.

Warning: this post is photo heavy.

Prawn on the Lawn

After 3 1/2 years in London Town, it's finally arrived, the restaurant that can be beaten by no other. Well that's what I think anyway.

Part fishmonger, part seafood restaurant, Prawn on the Lawn (POTL) is a must for any seafood fans. You'd be forgiven for thinking you'd been transported to a small fishing town in Cornwall.

Nestled away on an unassuming street in Highbury, POTL is fast becoming the reason that South London enthusiasts are reassessing their loyalty and jumping on the Victoria line for a trip to Highbury and Islington.

Prawn on the Lawn

Started by Rick and his charming bearded (well the guys anyway) crew , POTL is clearly a passionate venture for the whole team. Rick, Michael, Aimee, Chris and Katie are putting in all the hours to make this work and since it opened in August 2013 they have done a mighty job.

Confident that I'd found a real gem I convinced one of my favourites, Claire, to leave Putney on a glorious sunny day, get on a tube and travel across London to stuff our faces with seafood.

As we were the first in for the lunchtime slot, eager beavers that we are, we had the choice of the restaurant.

Downstairs is a dark cosy affair in the cellar, and the ground floor is where all the action takes place. If you can cope with the fishy smell then this is the best place to perch on a bar stool, sip some wine and watch the food being prepared.

The menu is focused on fresh produce and will change depending on what has been caught. There's a choice of small plates, or you can have a delicious looking seafood platter or even a whole lobster.

We ordered some prosecco to start whilst we discussed the catch of the day.

The drinks are served in glasses that the Great Gatsby himself would be proud to own.

We decided to order a few of the small plates and spent the whole afternoon chatting and eating.
Prawn on the Lawn
Starting with their signature dish - prawn on the lawn. Toasted home made soda bread with avocado, prawns, chilli and lime. Mouthwateringly good! This is a must for every diner, I couldn't recommend it enough.

Seared Tuna, spring onion, coriander with soy and mirin dressing.
Prawn on the Lawn

1/2 pint of prawns with wild garlic crème fraiche.
Prawn on the Lawn

Smoked Crab taramasalata with toasted soda bread.

We also ordered the marinated calamari with chilli, parsley and lemon but I was having too much fun and completely forgot to take a picture! Bad blogger. You can trust me when I say, like every thing else, it was pleasing to the eye and taste buds.

Every plate  was completely delicious and as it's served cold you can take your time and let the hours pass by whilst you eat, drink and be merry.

What was meant to be a quick catch up lunch became quite a boozy affair, moving on to a bottle of wine then because we clearly hadn't had enough we had one more glass of wine for the road.

Claire spotted the oyster challenge on the wall and never one to pass up on a competition she was ordering oysters immediately.

Disclaimer: Claire wants to make it very clear that she could easily eat at least 40 oysters to take the top position on the score board but for the purpose of trying as much of the menu as possible she stuck with 9 which put her in second place.

Being an oyster virgin, I ordered 1 so I wouldn't miss out on the fun. And the POTL team even let me go up on the board too!!

Prawn on the Lawn
Yeah so I'm on the score board, no biggy!!

Yeah it is!! Woohoo!
Prawn on the Lawn

It was Michael's 31st birthday so we thought it only right that he celebrated by showing his POTL loyalty with a new temporary tattoo!! Claire was more than happy to do the honours...

Prawn on the Lawn

This won't hurt one little bit...

Voilà!
Prawn on the Lawn
Happy Birthday Michael!

I can't praise the staff highly enough, young, fun and enthusiastic people that they are, with their backing and such delicious simple fresh food Rick is set for sure success. I can't imagine many other restaurants where you ask for a staff photo and off they eagerly go to get their props, an oyster, spider crab and lobster.

I'd like to say that no animals were harmed in the making of this post but that would be a lie!

Remember if you are local, POTL is also a fish monger so you can pop in and have the team prepare you something delicious and all you need to do is get it in the oven.

Once we'd eaten our fill of seafood we headed off into the scorching sun for an ice cream on Highbury Fields. It was the perfect Saturday.

I'm making this look very difficult, I think the prawns went to my head!
