Duck and Waffle

Sunday, 8 June 2014

So this is a fancy one. A great big celebratory lunch at the Duck and Waffle.

The cause for such a special treat was DG’s belated graduation; having missed his university graduation, much to his parent’s disappointment, then putting off his ACA graduation for a year it was finally time to celebrate the boy's academic achievements! DG’s parents were in town for the occasion so it was time to get our glad rags on and settle into our seats amongst the proud families and friends but first.....lunch!

Duck and Waffle is quite an experience. You enter through a designated entrance on the ground floor of the Heron Tower. Then you are smoothly whisked 40 floors into the sky in a glass lift fit for Willy Wonka.

At the top you are led along a Mediterranean style hallway with wooden panelled walls and tiled floors, round to an uber trendy bar with graffiti-ed walls and colourful glass bottle chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

The views of London Town can be seen from every angle and are breathtaking; it feels like you’ve taken a lift straight into the clouds!

We were seated and started to browse the menu. The staff can be slightly over attentive, with a different member of staff coming to check on you every minute. We ordered some water to try and buy some time so we could read the menu.

The advice from our waitress was to order 3-4 dishes each and share. At £10-20 per plate this is not an every day kind of restaurant! The clientèle was very business like when we arrived; all charging to the work credit card I’m sure, then moved on to a tourist crowd. There seemed to be blogger competition at every table!

We ordered a light and fruity Sauvignon Blanc to get the celebrations started and decided we may as well have pretty much everything on the menu. The food combinations are eccentric at times and you question whether it’ll work but we were happily surprised with the well thought out feast of sweet and savoury delights.

and finally the signature dish: duck & waffle / crispy leg confit / fried duck egg / mustard maple syrup.

It's too hard to choose what my favourite dish was so I'll cheat and tell you my top 3: beef carpaccio, bacon wrapped dates and the duck and waffle. Yum.

One of my favourite things in the world is having a long lunch with lots of sharing plates so you can spend the afternoon catching up and enjoying some delicious food.

Duck and Waffle definitely didn't disappoint.

They even gave DG a special treat for his graduation.

Sadly by the time we were leaving the weather had taken a turn for the worse and was pretty gloomy so we marched on with full bellies to DG's graduation ceremony.

As you can see, it was a pretty fancy affair!

It was one of those perfect days.

Congratulations DG!!

I'd highly recommend Duck and Waffle for a celebratory lunch. You need to book months in advance so get saving now for a Christmas treat!

  3. The Duck and Waffle has been on my must do for ages. I love beef carpaccio, crab and meatballs. The idea of eatting up in the clouds is appealing and duck with waffles very decident Lucy
