Street Feast - Dalston Yard

Friday, 20 June 2014

Being a total foodie, the idea of Street Feast fills me with joy. It’s basically a big party (in your mouth), with a huge variety of fantastic street food vendors hidden away in a merchant yard in Dalston. I walk past it regularly in my working day and you’d never think that come the weekend there is something very special happening inside!

Among bonfires and music, the bustling crowd eagerly queue up to try some of the best food that London has to offer at very reasonable prices. I was dreading the queue to get in but it was a breeze and only £3 entrance fee.

Being a bit obsessed with food my belly was rumbling with excitement of what we’d get to try, and panic that something might run out. So I grabbed DG’s hand and ran around to scope out what was on offer then had a quick debrief of what we fancied.

Celeb Spot: Professor Green copping a feel of Millie Macintosh!

It was time for a drink!

The vendors provide top quality food and the stalls are brimming with personality. It’s a real carnival atmosphere, with brightly coloured vans and stalls and happy customers munching on lobster rolls and tacos.

Perfect place for a shutterbug to have some fun!

On to the food.....

Pizza Pilgrims

Now I’ve never tried these guys before and after one bite it quickly became my favourite London pizza joint. They cook the pizzas in a huge oven on wheels which they drag in on a weekly basis to give the hoi polloi their pizza fill. The only thing to do is grab some kitchen roll and get stuck in.

Engine Hot Dogs

First prize goes too……These guys have the best stall of the whole place. It’s an amazing old fashioned fire engine in keeping with their branding, of course.

Chorizo Dog: topped with chilli jam, rocket and roasted red peppers. There was no talking from the moment we were handed this juicy hot dog until it was all gone. Yum.

Bleecker Street Burger

I have been waiting to try a Bleecker burger for months but never seem to get around to it. Tonight was my chance. They had a huge queue, you order and are given a number then you wait…..about 10 minutes. The burger didn’t look anything special but I wasn’t going to judge on appearance.

We split it in half, DG’s half with mustard, mine with ketchup. Then gobbled it down. I was disappointed by a big lump of gristle in mine which reminded me of eating a gross burger at a fun fair and so I was completely put off. Sad face.

Rola Wala

These guys are a long standing favourite at Street Feast, offering Indian street food with a twist, and a long queue to prove their popularity. The menu was a simple choice of a fresh nan served with fresh salads, sharp pickles, chutneys and a choice of either; Coriander Chicken Tikka, Goan Pulled Pork, or BBQ Lamb Rogan Josh. We were fit to burst at this point so we ordered one chicken nan instead of the suggested three.

The team bust their guts getting this food out quickly to a high standard with a perfectly timed conveyor belt of cooking being completed in harmony. I wish I had room to eat more than one!

Bad Brownie

After too much wine and food, it was time to hit the hay but then these bad boys caught my eye. My sweet tooth was crying out for some and it felt wrong to leave without a treat to eat when we got back.

I can honestly say this was the best brownie I have ever eaten. Even beating my own recipe which I big-headedly think is pretty amazing (check it out here)! Moist, chocolately, delicious! When DG realised how good it was we were fighting over the last piece.

Street Feast London - Dalston Yard

The guys behind Street Feast know exactly what they are doing and unlike other food festival’s there are plenty of places to take a pew whilst stuffing your face with a burger. Two thirds of the yard is covered so it’s a great hang out come rain or shine and there are numerous bars so you won’t spend your night queuing for a frozen margarita.

Oh and girls, the toilets flush and have loo roll. Bonus!

  2. I love Street Feast so much. It's such a shame you had a bad Bleecker Street experience, they're top of my best burgers list and I've never had a bad one.
