Abbeville Fete

Friday, 4 July 2014

Last weekend I had an unexpected little visitor in the form of my 4 year old brother. He packed his suitcase, grabbed his cuddly friends Toby and Fluffy and waited excitedly for me to pick him up from Euston.

Having a little person come to stay in London can be stressful business as there’s constant fear that you’ll lose them in the madness of commuters and tourists. Luckily for me it just so happened to be the weekend of the Abbeville Fete which was right on my doorstep, literally. So we didn’t have far to go for a fun day out without the dangers of falling down the tube gap or getting attacked by pigeons in Trafalgar Square!

All morning the sky was grey and miserable with the threat of a downpour at any minute so we sat gazing out the window and praying for blue skies. At 12, we couldn’t contain Alex anymore and went out to explore. A fete is a very British affair with bunting hanging from lamp posts, Pimms served by the bucket load, BBQs smoking and old fashioned games like hook a duck for the kids. There was even a dog show.

Lizzie, my wonderful housemate, came along for the fun and we spent the day browsing the stalls, playing games, eating sausages, running home to avoid the rain, back out for Pimms, face painting and a bit of dancing.

Alex was terrified of this guy but agreed to a very quick photo!

Lambeth Academy were providing some of the music and had an amazing steel drum group who perfected Rihanna and made me very happy.

The fun wasn't just for the children. For me and Lizzie it was all about the sausages and pimms.

Abbeville Village is a beautiful, quiet street just off Clapham Common and I'd highly recommend it for a wander at the weekend as there's some amazing boutique shops, great places for lunch and of course the Ginger Pig butchers for BBQ essentials.

It was such a fun day, I was very lucky that we could avoid heading into London and just have all the fun on our doorstep instead.

Thanks to my amazing housemates, Kate and Lizzie, for being on hand to help with the caring duties and for making sure that Alex was spoilt from the minute he arrived.
