Heard about the sweaty, panting tomato in Highbury recently!? 

IT’S ME! 

Let me explain!

Some of you may have already seen the hype on Instagram about a personal trainer called Kayla Itsines. She’s an Australian girl who has taken the world by storm with her fitness plan that gets the most amazing results. The proof is in all the transformation photos that not only Kayla uploads but all her followers too.

So what is this miracle ab creator I hear you scream!!!?…..well let me tell straight away, this is no easy way out! Me and Catherine are pretty fit and usually do at least 3 gym classes a week, involving cardio, weights, running etc. Kayla’s plan is a whole new level of HARDCORE workout!

I’ve been desperate to get involved and last week it all began, with Catherine as my motivational gym buddy.  

The 12 week plan is available online and is broken down into a mix of low intensity exercise like power walking or jogging, high intensity like sprinting, circuit training and stretching. Everyone I’ve mentioned Kayla too has been really interested and keen to know how it’s going so I'll document our workout madness on here. It’ll also give me extra motivation to keep going, instead of publicly failing!

So here's where it began.....

Week 1:
3 sessions of LISS Training – Low Intensity Steady State (power walking for 35-45 mins)
3 sessions of circuits – made up of 4 x 7 minute routines (28 min session)
1 session of stretching  

On Monday, we were raring to go. Power walking 2.7 miles to the gym before starting day 1 of circuits. We grabbed our equipment (a step, weights and medicine ball) then got started.

The first workout focused on cardio and legs, easy peasy right!? WRONG!

Within 3 minutes we were bright red and sweating profusely, hence the sweaty tomato! It’s a struggle to breathe, you feel dizzy and want to be sick, but then you get a 1 minute break which actually helps you forget how bad it is before you start again!

We were so keen on day 1 we even did a Pilates class afterwards to tick off the stretching workout. I could hardly walk home.

Tuesday was all about abs and arms (urgh!). It honestly almost me cry it was so hard! When the 28 mins of torture were over we went swimming / doggie paddling to try and shake off the burn. 

You do actually feel great about 30 minutes after doing the circuits, and then you fall asleep in your dinner because you are exhausted!

Thursday was the full body workout and it was a tough one but we could actually feel a slight improvement in our strength and recovery time (we weren’t panting for the entire 1 min break, just 50 seconds of it!). 

Bring on week two!

  1. I'm doing Insanity!! It's pretty hard core but not that fun :(. I did an awesome plan before my wedding called Turbo Fire, I would highly recommend that!!

  2. Oh no, I've heard about insanity being ridiculous, I'm not sure I'd be able to get through that!! I'll let you know how it goes with Kayla, bring on those abs! xx

  3. I spotted this via instagram a couple of days ago, looks far too hardcore for me though haha at least until I get back into a workout routine anyway which I'm just starting!
