Birthday Shenanigans

Tuesday, 28 October 2014

It was my birthday recently and in my usual (only child, attention grabbing) style I dragged it out for a full week starting with a girly dinner. I’d reserved a table at Callooh Callah for cocktails to start the night off. Callooh Callah is a great cocktail bar in Shoreditch offering a bit more class than its rivals in the area.

As soon as I walked in the door, it was these beauties that caught my eye!

Callooh Callah

My wonderful friend, Claire had bought me the biggest bunch of flowers I’d ever seen. I could hardly get my arms around them and they smelt gorgeous. Very lucky girl!

In Callooh Callah, you can sit in the main bar at the front, or book a private area “through the wardrobe” for something a bit more special. Although it’s not Narnia so don’t get too excited.

Inside the wardrobe is a weird world with walls made of cassette tapes, melting clocks and bronze palm trees.

The cocktail menu is always presented in a fun and unique way. Last time I came, it was in a retro cassette box. This time, it was a genius idea of using an oyster card holder. Love it!

We supped on our cocktails, having a catch up and opening wonderful presents and cards (I have the BEST friends).

We’d just stopped in for a quick drink as we had dinner reservations at Tramshed so we slurped noisely and moved on.

I snapped this gorgeous bunch as they strutted their way through Shoreditch.

I don’t think there could ever be enough photos of these flowers.

Tramshed is an old time favourite of mine. Started by Mark Hix, who I spotted on my first visit, the atmosphere is fun, buzzing and trendy. The house wine is very drinkable and the chicken and chips beats any Nandos rubbish hands down, for near enough the same dollar.

Tramshed

Set in a disused Tramshed dating back to 1900, the restaurant is vast and filled with loud, happy, chattering guests. All this is overlooked by Damien Hirst’s cow and chicken artwork. If you are wondering what’s on the menu then look no further than those two for a clue.

It’s chicken or steak all the way.

Tramshed

Alice took charge of the drinks menu and ordered us some prosecco whilst we all gazed over the menu pretending we weren’t just going to order the chicken.

So here's the food..…

Roast barn-reared Indian Rock chicken with stuffing and chips

Tramshed

Sutton Farm squash and sweet potato curry

The healthier gals in the group ordered Chicken and Sillfield Farm bacon salad with sweetcorn fritters

Once the chicken arrives, your friendly waiter will come and carve it all up for you.

The chicken is juicy and delicious. After 11 weeks of doing Kayla’s Bikini Body Guide, the chips were so good we could have died. I can be a real chip snob but they were the perfect amount of crisp and flavoured slightly by the chicken sitting on top of them. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

We gobbled down the lot and had to hold ourselves back from sucking the bones because that’s not lady like and should only be done in the privacy of your own home!

Tramshed

Then it was on to a brief but very embarrassing sing song.

Finally we thought as we were in the sharing mood; why not share a dessert too.

Salted caramel fondue with marshmallows and doughnuts.

Tramshed

Amazing but sickly sweet. If salted caramel could kill then this dessert would have you on a stretcher after 2 marshmallows!

I had such a fantastic birthday, and was truly spoilt by all. Thank you to everyone who made it really special even though thankfully its not quite time for my “special” birthday just yet!
