If you are looking for a city break with a difference then I’ve found just the place for you. Best of all its only a 3 hour flight from London.

Let me introduce you to the exotic city of Marrakech......

Marrakech

My new year's resolution was to visit new countries, and with Morocco always being top of my bucket list it seemed the perfect winter escape. With Lizzie eager to join in, we boarded an early flight from a snowy, blustery London and arrived a few hours later expecting the heat to hit us as we stepped from the plane. Sadly the weather wasn’t playing ball and it was pretty nippy but we didn’t let that stop us from some poolside playtime!

For many people Marrakech will be unlike anywhere you have ever been. It is a majestic, red city rising from the desert that will overwhelm all of your senses.

Picture this; palm tree lined streets, motorbikes whizzing past with entire families on board, trees bursting with oranges, camels sat at the roadside, benches of men watching the world go past and drinking endless cups of the tooth rotteningly sweet mint tea and donkeys pulling carts down modern shopping malls as if its the most normal thing in the world.

And all this is happening before you even reach the madness of the main square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, where the city's unique personality really shines for all to see.

My favourite part of this colourful, vibrant city is the souks; alleyway upon alleyway of Aladdin’s cave style shops and stalls for your browsing pleasure. You are bound to get lost but that is all part of the fun. We walked around for hours to the playful shouts of the vendors “Take a butchers at my swag” or “Hey Shakira”. Everyone we came across was friendly, welcoming and happy to show off their country.

In marrakech nothing is at it seems, so when shopping make sure you haggle hard. We kept it light hearted and got ourselves some great deals at a fraction of the original price.

Once it all gets too much and you need a break from the madness then find some stairs up to one of the city’s hidden rooftop bars. They offer serenity at the eye of the storm.

Terrasse des epices was our favourite and they even had straw hats so you could look glam whilst relaxing. After a mint tea and delicious tagine you'll be feeling refreshed and ready to head back down to do your best dell boy haggle.

If you visit Marrakech make sure to book yourself a massage at one of the city’s many spas. We went along to Le Bain Bleu which was hidden away in a beautiful Riad. An hour long hot stone massage cost around £25, it was amazing and worked out any of the remaining work stresses. Afterwards we wrapped up in our snuggly robes and lay around with mint tea and biscuits.

Jemaa el-Fnaa is the main square in Marrakech and it is frantic. The second you step foot inside everyone will want to sell you something so be determined and walk on through. You’ll want to bring your camera as every second offers a new photo opportunity.

Marrakech

The weird and wonderful gather here to sell their goods to tourists. One second you’ll be watching snake charmers, then a monkey will walk past in a nappy, then you’ll have women trying to paint your arms in henna and people trying to sell you horse and carriage rides. At night the craziness goes up to a whole new level of intensity. You’ll either love it or hate it but everyone needs to experience it during their trip.

There’s more to come in our Morrocan adventure so drop back again soon.
