Burgers and Ice Cream

Tuesday, 24 March 2015

If you are looking for the best steak in London then you need look no further because Hawksmoor is the place to sink your teeth into a fine cut of beef.

If however you are looking for the best burger in London then you are facing a much bigger challenge. Around 12 months ago, Sammy and I took it upon ourselves to hunt down this burger and we strive to continue in our mission. So far the winner is Patty and Bun.

Hawksmoor has always been high on our burger hit list so we booked a lunch time slot at their Seven Dials branch and took Robert along for the ride.

Hawksmoor

Hawksmoor

Hawksmoor has an old fashioned feel with dark wood, leather furnishings and smartly dressed staff.

When you are out with Sammy and Robert the first decision is always what cocktail to have.

Hawksmoor

Served strong and manly looking. Grrrr....

Hawksmoor

After a frantic natter, including an in-depth debrief of my night out at a sleazy salsa club, we got down to the serious business of ordering.

Hawksmoor

Two juicy cheese burgers for the girls.

Hawksmoor

With deef dripping fries for Sammy and triple cooked chips for me.

Hawksmoor

Bone marrow for Robert,

Hawksmoor

...with a side of macaroni cheese.

Hawksmoor

Sad news: The burger was a bit of a soggy mess for us, it was literally dripping down our arms. Only to be eaten with a knife and fork which is not how a burger should be eaten.

The macaroni cheese was delicious and addictive.

If you are in town and looking for a steak then definitely head to Hawksmoor, they have a huge wine selection to suit every taste,

and massive juicy steaks to choose fresh from a board. Sammy had her eye on the 900g Porterhouse!

After lunch, we made the most of London's bright blue skies and went for a stroll around Soho with a quick detour to Gelupo for ice cream.

Gelupo

Decorated like an old school ice cream parlour, Gelupo offers adventurous ice cream and gelato flavours which taste fantastic.

Gelupo

Gelupo

How good does that look? Ricotta and sour cherry! You can lick the screen...I won't judge. Ok maybe I will a little bit.

Two very happy customers!

Next time the sun is out in London, get yourself down to Gelupo to try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Pix and Dancing

Sunday, 22 March 2015

Tucked away on Bateman Street, in the heart of Soho is an unassuming little tapas bar with food worth shouting from the rooftops about. On walking through the door into the dimly lit, cosy restaurant and spotting the bar stacked high with platters of mini tapas, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d been transported to the streets of Barcelona.

I had Miss Trimming, my partner in crime, in tow so after adding some very reasonably priced wine into the mix we knew we were in for a great night. We had BIG plans for a night of dancing so sadly grainy iPhone photos only for Pix Pintxos.

So what’s the deal?

Pintxos are tapas style snacks held together by a skewer and presented in a shot glass, ramekin dish or on crusty fresh bread. The best thing is that there is no ordering involved so no need to get overwhelmed with food envy. Just help yourself to as many of the mouth-watering nibbles as you fancy.

Pix Pintxos

The easy pricing system means that pintxos with short skewers cost £1.95 and larger skewers are £2.95. Just collect them all in the glass on your table and that’s your bill sorted.

We enjoyed hours of wine, chatter and regular trips up to the bar for more snacks.

The staff were laid back, friendly and efficient. Tempting us with platters of the fresh tapas straight from the kitchen. The bar was heaving and had a great atmosphere for a Saturday night in Soho.

On to dessert, oh the desserts.....

Pix Pintxos

Churros with chocolate sauce and Summer fruit chantilline. They were amazing!!

Pix Pintxos

My only issue with Pix Pintxos is that the portions are quite small which for us was fine but I’d run from the place screaming at the sight of the bill if I came here with the boy. He’d eat them all and clear my bank account in the process. Do not arrive starving!

This style of food calls for chilled out dinner dates so grab some friends, bring some good stories and nibble the night away.

We stumbled across the road to dance off our full bellies in one of the best bars in Soho.

Archer Street

Archer Street may look like your average London wine bar on the outside but on the inside it is filled with bar staff who are unbelievably talented singers. They'll be serving you drinks one minute then jump on the table the next minute and perform a lung busting hit. Picture a classy Coyote Ugly.

Archer Street

It's impossible to come to Archer street and not have an amazing night.

How to be the perfect bridesmaid

Friday, 6 March 2015

There comes a time in every girl's life when everyone you know will start getting hitched.
For me, this time is now.

And during all the celebration fizz and excited squeals, you might be lucky enough to hear a request to join the wedding party. I recently had this pleasure and was asked to be a bridesmaid.

Being a bridesmaid comes with many important duties, some of these you will be aware of.
And some you will not.

Do not worry though, here’s my guide to pulling off the role with charm, wit and class.

Swish the bride: your main job for the day is making sure the bride is happy and looks amazing. Wherever she goes, you go. Keep an eye on her and constantly sneak up behind her to swish her dress out so it looks perfect. You can have a little swish yourself if you fancy.

Fill the dance floorWhen the DJ starts, you start. Even if the first dance hasn't happened, dance like no one is watching. Most weddings finish at 12pm so if you want a solid 5 hours of dancing then you need to start early. Grab random elderly relatives from the bar and force them to join in too. Once you've sucked them in, run off to collect another. Bonus points for getting the bride up. You claim that first dance for yourself.

Catch the bouquet: if you haven't already got a ring on it (or even if you have), you are going to need to make sure one of the bridesmaids catches the bouquet. Shoes off. Arms wide. Be prepared to dive or pull hair if needed.

Only winning counts.

Entertain: once the DJ ends you need to step up and perform. Bring a small child's keyboard with you and sing Ed Sheeran songs or learn a dance to welcome guests from around the world. I focused on the Hakka and it went down very well. Cringe.

All of the above becomes easy after copious glasses of wine. Believe me.

(Note: Please take my advice with a pinch of salt, unless your friends are amazingly chilled out this may result in ruined friendships, broken chairs or ripped dresses).

Congratulations Terna and Rob and thanks for encouraging my crazy!
